Background Information Cyclin E1 functions as a regulator of the cell cycle, promoting the G1 to S phase transition by binding to and activating the cyclin dependent kinase CDK2. The abundance of cyclin E1 fluctuates during a normal cell cycle and is controlled at the level of gene transcription and by ubiquitin dependent proteolysis. Non-complexed cyclin E1 is degraded by the Cul3 pathway, however when cyclin E1 is bound to CDK2 its ubiqutination is dependent on a positive phosphorylation status, which enables its recognition by SCF Fbw7 . The impact of cyclin E1 quantities on cell cycle regulation is reflected in the elevated levels expressed by many types of human tumours.
