5mL centrifuge tube takes all the conveniences of standard 1.5mL tubes and scales them up for larger volumes. These polypropylene tubes come with an attached cap that only provides a tight, leak-proof seal, it can also be effortlessly opened (or closed) with one hand. In incubation applications, the cap of the 5mL tube is designed to stay sealed for 10 minutes when samples are "boiled" at 100°C. When the internal pressure approaches an unsafe level, the cap partially opens, softly, in a controlled manner, releasing excess pressure, but minimizing any splashing of contents.
The center of the cap also has a special thin "membrane" area that is designed for easy puncture and access by a syringe/needle. Once punctured, the opening is useful for venting the internal pressure caused by incubation at moderately high temperatures. The tubes are made of maximum clarity, virgin polypropylene and are certified RNase & DNase free. Sterile tubes are also pyrogen-free. They are sized to be compatible with all Benchmark™ (USA) and standard German-designed equipment, including centrifuges, dry bath block heaters, tube racks a thermal shakers/vortexers.
The 16 mm tube diameter is identical to the diameter of standard 15mL tubes, which ensures further compatibility with centrifuge rotors, etc. In many applications, these tubes have replaced 15mL tubes, dramatically reducing plastic waste, storage space, and shipping costs. The potential contamination of pipettor shafts is greatly reduced because the 56mm total tube length (vs. 120mm for standard 15mL tubes) is short enough for standard 1mL or 5mL tips to reach the tube's conical bottom.
